**Qortal is a peer-to-peer, blockchain platform** designed to offer an alternative to the existing internet, without any centralized entities or control! Its infrastructure is propelled by its community of users, who all have the opportunity to run full nodes to validate transactions on the blockchain, earning QORT for doing so.
Qortal facilitates the hosting of all types of content, the launching of decentralized applications (Q-Apps), and the transacting of data with a utility-based currency, QORT. All of this is possible without relying on servers, cloud providers, DNS registration or ICANN, continual hosting fees, or any type of middlemen whatsoever.
Qortal launched in 2020 with **no pre-mine, no ICO, and no VC funding**, just code, community, and contribution. Qortal is built from scratch in Java and leverages CIYAM-based Automated Transactions (ATs), rather than EVM-based SmartContracts. ATs are a CPU that runs on the blockchain, simpler, and able to automate things like escrow, lotteries, funds distribution, and more with no third parties. Every user runs a full node by default, making the network **resilient, censorship-proof, and self-sustaining**. As more users join and run nodes, the network grows stronger and more resilient, offering a path to true digital independence for every Qortian.

## What Makes Qortal Unique?
Qortal’s approach to decentralization and blockchain technology is unique, and can be summarized by the following key points:
- **Full-node by default**: Every _minter_ on Qortal runs a full node, allowing them to secure the network and providing another potential location for the encrypted/chunked data published to QDN.
- **Q-Apps**: Decentralized applications like Q-Tube (video), Q-Chat (encrypted messaging), Q-Shop (e-commerce), Q-Share (file sharing), Friends (social media), Q-Support (bug fixes and tech support threads),and Q-Fund (crowdfunding) (naming only a few of the existing Q-Apps, built by either the Qortal Development Group, or Qortal Community). Q-Apps run completely decentralized, published to QDN, and run locally on each user's machine upon access.
- **Qortal Data Network (QDN)**: A built-in decentralized data layer that replaces traditional hosting and allows users to publish websites, content, and apps without any central server.
- **Minting instead of mining**: New QORT coins are distributed to users who QDN data is encrypted/chunked by default, and allows both public and private data (and applications) to be published by any user with a Registered Name on Qortal.
- **No centralized infrastructure**: There are no AWS cloud servers involved, no centralized failure points, and no reliance on any third parties.Everything runs peer-to-peer, with users remaining in control of their data at all times.

## What Is QORT?
**QORT is the native coin of the Qortal blockchain**, which is used for:
- Registering names to be utilized for publishing and/or 'usernames' on the Qortal Network, with use as 'assets' upon release of multi-names (planned for June 1 2025).
- Creation of most transaction types, for associated transaction fees that are paid to the Minters along with block rewards.
- Creation of on-chain groups, and publishing of private group-accessible data and applications.
- Rewarding publishers, content creators, developers, and more, in both automated and manual fashions.
- Creation of Automated Decentralized CrowdFund campaigns by leveraging ATs, and much more.
QORT was launched at block 0 with 0 QORT, and minted from there by the community of node runners. There is no 'maximum cap' to the amount of QORT ever created, however, the release schedule is very slow, and as of May 2025, less than 10 million QORT have been created. The release schedule continues to slow down, until it reaches less than half the rate of creation upon its geneiss, at which point a community vote will take over deciding whether the rate increases or decreases within a set of hard-coded parameters. Never will the creation rate be higher than it was at Genesis, and never will it be lower than 1 QORT per block. This ensures that QORT will be able to live forever, without concerns over dust and/or lost wallets causing there to be no spendable coins available on the network.
- No 'middlemen' can decide what you can and cannot say, do, or publish.
- No exchanges can decide when or how you can trade, nor with whom it takes place.

- A fair launch means there were not any large holders from pre-Genesis that could potentially dump a bunch of coins they didn't earn on the market in the future.
-No data can be purchased or sold to relay your 'habits' to advertising agencies. This type of data simply doesn't exist.
-Qortal is much more than simply a coin, or a financial product. It is a completely new way to interact in the digital world, and control your own digital future. It is a new ecosystem truly built by and for the people, to eliminate the potential for corporate servitude indefinitely.
Qortal is a larger vision than any previous project. It is what Bitcoin wanted to be when it grew up. It is what ETH tried and failed to become. It is what every crypto fanatic that actually cares about the core tenants of the technology have been dreaming about, and it is the only digital future worth having.
