What Is VeChain (VET)?
VeChain is an EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain built for real-world use: supply chains, product provenance, digital product passports, sustainability and tokenized rewards for verified actions. Its network, VeChainThor, runs on two tokens. **VET** is the native asset used for staking and network security. **VTHO** is the gas token used to pay for transactions. Keeping the two separate means the cost of using the network is not tied directly to VET's price.
Since the Hayabusa upgrade on December 2, 2025, VeChainThor has run on Delegated Proof of Stake. VET holders help secure the network by running a validator or by staking and delegating through StarGate.
Who Founded VeChain?
VeChain was founded in 2015 by Sunny Lu. It began by combining blockchain with NFC chips, RFID tags and QR codes to track product authenticity and supply chains, first on private and consortium chains and with VEN, an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. The VeChainThor mainnet launched in June 2018, and VEN migrated to the native VET token. VeChain has worked with organizations including Walmart China, BMW, DNV, PwC and Boston Consulting Group.
The VeChain Foundation supports the development and adoption of VeChainThor. VeChain Foundation San Marino S.R.L. has published MiCAR white papers for VET and VTHO.
What Makes VeChain Unique?
- **Fee delegation:** apps and businesses can pay transaction fees for their users, so users don't need to hold VTHO.- **Multi-clause transactions:** one transaction can carry several operations, such as a transfer, a contract call and a data record. Developers can also set when a transaction becomes valid, when it expires and what it depends on.
- **EVM compatibility:** developers use Solidity and standard Ethereum tools. The Interstellar hard fork brought VeChainThor's EVM in line with Ethereum's Cancun, Prague and Osaka upgrades.
- **Dual-token model:** VET for staking and security, VTHO for fees. New VTHO is generated only by actively staked VET, and part of each transaction fee is burned.
VeChain Renaissance Roadmap
VeChain Renaissance is a multi-phase upgrade of VeChainThor's technology, staking, tokenomics and governance.- **Galactica (July 2025):** an EIP-1559-style fee market with base-fee burning and priority fees, and EVM alignment with Ethereum's Shanghai version.
- **StarGate (July 2025):** an NFT-based staking platform. Staked VET is represented by a StarGate NFT that can be delegated to a validator and used to vote on VeVote.
- **Hayabusa (December 2, 2025):** moved consensus to Delegated Proof of Stake, with up to 101 validators, stake-weighted finality and staking-based VTHO issuance.
- **Interstellar (in progress):** its first hard fork, VIP-255, was approved on VeVote in August 2026 and activated on mainnet on September 16, 2026. It added 11 Ethereum upgrades, including transient storage, the MCOPY instruction, BLS12-381 cryptography and secp256r1 (passkey) signature support. Further planned steps include faster finality, more flexible delegation, on-chain attestation for real-world assets and new developer tooling. See the 2026 roadmap.
How Does VET Staking Work?
**Validators** run network infrastructure, produce blocks and must self-stake at least 25 million VET. **Delegators** stake VET through StarGate, receive a staking NFT and delegate it to a validator of their choice, without running any infrastructure.Rewards are paid in VTHO and split by default 30% to validators and 70% to delegators, subject to protocol parameters and validator terms. Reward rates depend on total VET staked, validator performance and network conditions, and are not fixed or guaranteed.
What Is in the VeChain Ecosystem?
- **VeWorld:** VeChain's official self-custody wallet, on mobile and as a browser extension. Users can hold and send VET, VTHO, other tokens and NFTs, stake through StarGate, vote on VeVote, use VeChain apps and connect hardware wallets. Social login makes it easy for people new to crypto.- **VeBetter:** a consumer ecosystem, developed with Boston Consulting Group, that rewards verified positive actions such as using reusable products, cycling, exercising or charging an EV. As of mid-2026 it had more than 50 live apps, 53 million tokenized actions and 5 million users. Its AI agent, B3MO, is being developed to help personalize rewards (Whitepaper 2.0). Its tokens are **B3TR** (rewards) and **VOT3** (governance, converted 1:1 from B3TR), which are separate from VET and VTHO.
- **VeVote:** VeChainThor's governance platform, where validators and StarGate NFT holders vote on protocol proposals.
How Many VeChain (VET) Tokens Are There?
According to the VET MiCAR white paper, VET has a fixed maximum supply of 86,712,634,466 tokens, and no more can be created. Holding VET gives no ownership, equity or corporate rights in the VeChain Foundation.VTHO has no fixed maximum supply. It is generated by actively staked VET and consumed when transactions are made on VeChainThor.
